One such redevelopment project presented a uniquely complex challenge: variable groundwater conditions across multiple aquifers, compounded by restricted site space and construction adjacent to critical transit infrastructure.
The site was underlain by both an Upper and Lower Aquifer, with highly irregular groundwater conditions. The Upper Aquifer required close well spacing to achieve effective drawdown, while the Lower Aquifer needed continuous monitoring to determine connectivity and ensure no adverse impact.
This complex hydrogeology demanded a carefully engineered, site-specific solution.
WJ Canada designed and implemented a system to target the Upper Aquifer while continuously monitoring drawdown in the Lower Aquifer. Our solution combined internal and external dewatering wells, supported by a compact sedimentation tank, chosen specifically to suit the site’s restricted space.
The works were carried out immediately adjacent to a TTC subway box, where ground movement could have posed significant risk. WJ’s system ensured effective groundwater control without causing settlement or disruption to the transit infrastructure.
During installation, unexpected gaps were encountered in the caisson walls, allowing water inflows at a critical interface condition. Drawing on our deep technical expertise, the WJ team quickly proposed and implemented a tailored fix, effectively managing the inflows and keeping the project on schedule without delays.
