Delivering Certainty at Finch West Station

Finch West LRT

Project overview

Finch West LRT

Toronto’s Finch West Light Rail Transit (Line 6) continues the city’s ambitious investment in rapid transit expansion. Running 11 kilometres across northwest Toronto, the line connects communities, businesses, and schools, carrying an estimated 40,000 passengers daily by 2031.

At the heart of this new route are two underground stations: the terminus at Humber College and Finch West Station, where the LRT interchanges with Line 1 of the Toronto subway system. Among these, Finch West presents some of the most complex engineering challenges; requiring deep excavation, intricate underground connections, and precise groundwater control.

A Deeply Complex Station Build

Finch West Station includes a deep connection to the existing subway station and an underground track crossing. Excavation must progress through multiple groundwater-bearing zones, each requiring a tailored dewatering solution to ensure both worker safety and structural stability.

Without robust groundwater control, the project risked delays and increased costs. That’s where WJ Canada’s expertise came in.

WJ Canada was brought in to design and implement a groundwater management solution capable of handling Finch West’s variable geology.

Precision Dewatering with Multiple Systems

Our team deployed a combination of deep wells, wellpoints, and eductor wells, each chosen to address specific groundwater conditions across the site.

This engineering-led approach allowed us to:

  • Lower groundwater levels safely across multiple excavation depths.
  • Maintain stable conditions for tunnelling and station construction.
  • Provide continuous system monitoring to ensure reliability throughout excavation.

Building on Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown Success

WJ’s role at Finch West builds on our proven performance across Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown LRT (Line 5), where we delivered dewatering on 12 of 14 stations. That track record of success established WJ as the vendor of choice for groundwater management on major LRT projects in Toronto.

By combining global expertise with local insight, we ensured that Finch West could move forward with confidence, despite its complex ground conditions.

Engineering Certainty for Toronto’s Transit Future

At WJ Canada, we go beyond installing systems, we deliver certainty for our clients. On Finch West Station, our technical expertise, innovative approach, and collaborative mindset helped unlock progress on one of Toronto’s most challenging underground builds.

Just as at Caledonia and across the Crosstown, WJ’s work at Finch West demonstrates our ability to solve complex engineering challenges, manage risk, and keep Toronto’s transit expansion moving forward.
