Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water recently announced its half-year results confirming its strong performance over the past six months enabling the company to deliver £123 million of investment in infrastructure and customer services in 2015 and 2016. As a result, WJ Groundwater has been subcontracted to work on improving Bynea Treatment Works in Llanelli, Wales.
The project, led by WJ’s Thomas Stockman (Project Manager) began in late October 2015 and is on-going. It saw 11 deepwells installed to allow for the construction of a new screening chamber. The structure was constructed as a sheet-piled cofferdam to a depth of 6.1m, and a new pump chamber, constructed in segments from the top down. The deepwells were embedded 11 m deep and assembled using a rotary drilling rig utilising the Symmetrix system. This helped our operatives to avoid a need for a water supply for the drilling works and cancelled out further pumps for water circulation. The entire system was installed within 5 days of the drilling being completed. In addition, these processes included having to bury portions of the header-main to maintain access to the excavation plant through to the new structures.
“Drilling in South Wales can be challenging due to the variety of geology in the region,” said Thomas. “However, using the Symmetric system was a good problem solver and perfect for this kind of installation project.”
