WJ Groundwater are pleased to announce that one of our recent projects in Scotland has been announced as the winner of a prestigious industry prize. WJ were awarded the contract to undertake dewatering works at the site on the outskirts of Glasgow between July 2015 and July 2016, and helped to contribute to the project which was recently awarded ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical Value up to £1.0m by Ground Engineering magazine.
Between July 2015 and July 2016 WJ were appointed by COWI UK (Formally known as Donaldson Associates) in conjunction with Morrison Utilities to install an eductor dewatering system in silty sand to aid the construction of a new pumping station shaft at Provost Driver Court in Renfrew on the outskirts of Glasgow.
The project had a number of highly challenging aspects, it was located at the edge of a residential cul-de-sac and therefore the consequences of settlement as a result of the dewatering could be significant. The purpose of the dewatering system was to densify the granular soils, a technique rarely used in the UK, and therefore one that carried a certain amount of interest and uncertainty. Fortunately the dewatering and subsequent engineering works were successfully completed and the amount of settlement induced was minimal and within the anticipated limits.
The project was nominated alongside 4 other projects in the ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical Value up to £1.0m’ in the Ground Engineering magazine 2017 awards, and beat off tough competition to come away victorious from the glamorous awards ceremony at London’s Hilton Park Lane Hotel.
